Waynesville - It is with much anguish that the family of Wayne "Big Wayne" Smith, 23, announces his unexpected passing away on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Mission Hospital.
Wayne was a resident of Haywood County where he attended Tuscola High School. He was the son of Wayne "Fuzzy" and Faye Smith of Maggie Valley. Wayne loved his family with all his heart and he surpassed all expectations and standards as a husband and father. He was a gentle and selfless soul, a friend to all and a stranger to none. He truly believed the quote "You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you." As proof of this, he gave the gift of life by being an Organ and Tissue Donor so others could live.
Wayne received the award "Going The Extra Mile" along with a certificate of appreciation for dedication and service to the Maggie Valley Fire & Rescue for his quick actions resulting in saving a life. Although he moved out of the district, his admiration, loyalty, and love for his brothers of the Fightin' 17 never wavered.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his cherished wife, Jessica Harbin Smith; one daughter, Rylee Allen; two sons, Luke and Michael Allen; two sisters, Sheri Mason (Logan) of Clyde and Sierra Vasquez (Edgar) of Candler; two brothers, William Smith (Bobby Jo) of Galivants Ferry, South Carolina and Joseph Griggs of Maggie Valley; nieces and nephews, Tiffany and Alyson Smith, Leola and LJ Mason, Andrea and Christopher Vasquez.
There will be a celebration of life for friends and family from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maggie Valley Fire & Rescue, 2901 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.
The care of Wayne has been entrusted to Cremation Care by Wells and an online memorial register is available at "Obituaries" at www.cremationcarebywells.com.
